What happens to a revocable trust when the grantor dies?

When the grantor dies, the trust terms generally control what happens next for the assets held in the trust. In many cases, the successor trustee steps in, gathers any needed documentation, and manages or distributes the trust assets according to the trust document. Because properly titled trust assets may be handled outside probate, administration can be more streamlined than assets that still have to move through a court-supervised estate process.

Trusts are typically established with the help of a legal professional. Quorum does not provide legal or tax advice. We recommend consulting with your attorney or other professional to determine what's appropriate for your situation. You need to review a strategy for your own particular circumstances that takes into account the applicable laws in your state before making any decisions.
